A Complementary Strategy. My view: I really see them as the same thing. You should always consider the simplest methods first. Starting with just understanding the data that supports and is created by your business decision process. Look at it ... and today there is no excuse to not visualize it using many forms of easy to use software.
Business Intelligence then means to systematize that examination process. This includes both the data and simple, understandable measures that can be derived from it. Get other people, both experts and novices with a fresh view, involved as well. Then, strongly consider analytics, advanced pattern recognition techniques to take the next steps. You will then be well armed to provide new value.
